Doja Cat’s Coachella Fever Dream: BTS offers an intimate glimpse into the electrifying preparation for her iconic Coachella performance.
Doja Cat made Coachella history in 2024, captivating audiences as the first female rapper to ever headline the iconic festival. Her performance was a mesmerizing blend of her greatest hits and avant-garde fashion statements. Speaking to Vogue, Doja revealed, “This show is a reflection of my evolution over the past two years—a celebration of self-love and personal growth. The futuristic aesthetic, with its plastic and synthetic elements, symbolizes a journey of self-discovery and understanding.
Surreal Visionaries: Collaborative Creation for Coachella
Collaborating with stylist and creative director Brett Alan Nelson, the pair began conceptualizing Doja’s Coachella performance as early as November. Nelson recalls, “She had these incredible visions involving hair, muscles, and bones. We wanted to explore a world of masculinity, pushing the boundaries with materials and shapes rarely seen on stage.” Known for her bold fashion choices, Doja was drawn to the idea of a surreal metamorphosis during the show. “I was drawn to creams, whites, eggshell, and bone hues to complement my bleached hair,” she explains. “I aimed for a dreamlike, textural experience—like stepping into my thoughts through a journey within my hair.
Crafting Doja’s Coachella Style
With a well-defined vision, Nelson initiated the creation process by sketching various designs for Doja, followed by reaching out to different designers for collaboration. “Being a costume designer myself, I wanted to incorporate some of my own creations into our performance,” Nelson explains. “I understand her preferred shapes and comfort zones.” Collaborating with several labels, including renowned hair artist Charlie Le Mindu, they brought their unique concepts to life. Nelson shares, “Doja Cat’s Coachella envisioned a ‘haircut’ theme for the start of our show, which sparked creativity. I’ve admired Charlie Le Mindu for years and collaborated with him not only on the dancers’ outfits but also on designing Doja’s look and customized Staud shoes.”
In line with the hair-inspired theme, Doja and Nelson teamed up with Entire Studios for a faux-fur ensemble, featuring a blonde crop top, bikini bottoms, and Timberland boots. “Amala had specific color preferences for the show, with blonde being one of them, mirroring her hair,” Nelson notes. “We finalized a design for this look that exudes sexiness and chicness.”
For Coachella’s finale, Doja and Nelson crafted a powerful bodycon look with Alexander Wang, featuring sexy rope details—a daring twist for the grand stage.
These unique outfits created one of Coachella weekend one’s standout fashion moments. As for weekend two, Nelson hints at fresh vibes, promising an equally joyful experience. “Stay tuned,” he teases.
